A personal observatory for the hidden structures that shape human systems.

Launched on May 8, 2025—my personal "International Day of the Variable Star"—The Quiet Variable is a collection of essays, observations, and field notes about the forces that influence our lives long before they appear in a dashboard, report, or balance sheet.

I work in a world shaped by forecasts, metrics, financial models, and decisions made at scale. Over the years, I've become fascinated by a recurring pattern: many of the things that matter most are (unsurprisingly) difficult to measure:

  • Trust
  • Attention
  • Empathy
  • Alignment
  • Belonging
  • Curiosity

These forces rarely appear in formal systems, yet they often determine the outcomes those systems produce.

The Quiet Variable is where I explore those hidden variables.

Some essays begin with a meeting, a classroom, a spreadsheet, a conversation, or a moment of realization. From there, they follow the thread beneath the surface—looking for the structures, incentives, relationships, and assumptions that make certain outcomes more likely than others.

You'll find reflections on organizations, leadership, data, artificial intelligence, learning, work, and the occasional detour into life itself. While the subjects vary, the underlying question remains remarkably consistent:

What invisible forces are shaping the things we can see?

I don't really write to provide definitive answers.

I write because observation is a way of understanding, and understanding begins with learning how to notice. Sometimes the essays will be analytical. Sometimes reflective. Occasionally both at once.

My hope is that you'll leave seeing something you hadn't noticed before.

Welcome to the observatory.
